The conference was over and the reality of needing to go back to real life was sinking in. A lot of these youth only see each other once a year at this conference.
We went to the house of one of the organizers of the conference for a BBQ dinner. He shared with us some of the pains and hurts of the residential schools and how there are still residual effects to the generations today. There is still a lot of racism that they experience today which makes it difficult to heal. We talked about one difficulty of ministry was because spirituality and culture are so intertwined.
We also surprised his son with a birthday cake, this is all part of the ministry of presence. It is important to listen and show them you care before talking.
We made it onto the reserve late at night and got our first glimpse of it.
